Blogger

Happiness is...

The modern technology of blogger. For the second time this year, I have been able to write a few days ahead of time so life didn't have to take a time out to blog. This resolution has been important to me, and it has certainly taught me a lot. But it will not interrupt life.

And maybe that's happiness in its purist form.

Parody

Happiness is...

Parodies. Find something ridiculous? There's an easy response. Make fun of it in just as ridiculous a fashion. Mock it, comment on it, or trivialize its message.

Oh and, by the way, HAPPINESS IS BEING 24 HOURS AWAY FROM A WEEK IN A TROPICAL ISLAND WITH MY MAN. The end. Have a nice day.

Playlists

Happiness is...

Playlists.

In the old days, they produced records. One artist, one album.
By the time the 70s and 80s came around, people were making mix tapes of their favorite songs. Compilations came out. Now. Best of. Radios played the top 40 and a mix of 80s, 90s, and today.
And then CDs... and the current trend, in Pandora or Spotify or Itunes or LastFM or whatever your favorite service is. Why choose one artist or one album, ever? Go ahead, round up your favorite tunes. Listen to some variety. Keep yourself on your toes. Find the perfect playlist. Now THAT is music to my ears.

Packing Lists.

Happiness is...

Packing lists.

I am not a huge fan of packing. I love the idea of travel, and packing adds to the excitement, don't get me wrong. However, I also have too much anxiety---did I pack everything I need? What am I forgetting? What will happen when I get there and realize I didn't bring _____?! So, I love packing lists. They relieve a lot of my stress and give me ideas I wouldn't have thought about. I feel competent about taking off and not looking back.

Wednesday morning I head home until January. In that time I celebrate two holidays and take a trip to a tropical island. So, naturally, this time around packing is especially difficult. No worries, though, I have a list. That solves everything, right?

Yikes.

Piracy

Happiness is...

Pirates. I love dreadlocks, and flowy shirts, and sword fights, and booty...

But even more than all of that, I love today's pirates. They can warn you all they want, but the idea of stealing music and shows is just too glamorous. Ah, technology.

Radio

Happiness is...

Streaming radio. It no longer matters that I am in graduate school 85 miles away from home... with modern technology and a good attitude, I can still listen to my favorite morning show, tune in for the best music, and rock out to what I am loyal to. That's the way I like it!

Besides, there's no good music in this town anyway. Thank you internet!

Clarity at last!

Happiness is...

Skype head sets. Happiness is finally understanding my man when he is talking to me instead of hearing some garbled charlie-brown type vocals, instead of feeling like he's speaking to me underwater.

Happiness is a real, nice, conversation. Granted, it's going to be a little bitter for a while, but things will get better and skype talks will remain great.

Sleep

Happiness is...

Sleep timers.

Want to watch a couple episodes of sitcom abc before you go to bed? Well, feel free. But by God, you don't have to leave your tv on until the wee hours of the morning. No, you don't, not when you can push a quick button and let your tv turn itself off. Don't bother waking up, getting up, walking over to the box and giving it up... not when you can set the timer for 30 minutes and roll over. Roll over into a great night's sleep. And we know what good sleep does to us---wake up happy, why don't you?

Friends who write

Happiness is...

Friends who write. Blogging is an art that I am certainly no expert at (in case yohttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifu didn't already know), but I have several friends whose blogs I respect completely. They provide a little subtle inspiration, a few choice words, and a heck of a good read.

For example, today, this one.

I like to look at blogs who lay it all out in a simple manner, and allow the internet to be what it was made for: easy. There are few things in modern society that are. Shame.

Due to her, and others in my life, I am Happy.

iPod Touch

Happiness is...

My new iPod touch. Yes, I am that nerd. I just bought it as a reward to myself for a great year of work (school ends in a week and a half) and I have been playing all weekend. Free apps, games, facebook, music, photos. I couldn't ask for more.

I don't have an iPhone. In fact, I am planning to continue paying practically nothing for cell service...mwahaha. However, I sincerely enjoy my new gadget anyway. Touch, I'd put in a good word for it. Not bad at all...

My current favorite: cut the rope.
Any recommendations?

Photography

Happiness is...

Photography.
Photography has a special way of capturing cherished moments.
Photography has a special manner of bringing a smile.
Photography has a special place in my heart. Period.

It just keeps getting easier too, affordable and customizable and digital. Make it your best, and take home the memories. I know it's a priority for me.

Clean inbox

Happiness is...

A cleaned out inbox. It may be a strenuous process, especially for someone as sentimental as myself (but what if, one day, I want to look back at that forward about leprechauns?) but the end product is just... so... beautiful.

The serenity of an empty page. Of having all the inbox emails in one browser view. In organizing the subfolders and decluttering contacts. Every now and then, sanity needs the world to clean up their email. We clean up so many other areas of our life (well, at least a few). So why do we let our junk mail build up anyway?

Keys

Happiness is...

The car alert that comes with leaving your keys in the ignition. The way the car politely screams out your oopsies is a godsend. I remember the age when I drove a 1990 Corsica and locked my keys in my car more than once. Heck, I can recall an event locking my keys in my car while the engine was running---luckily we are past those times!

Now, if I forget my keys in the ignition the bell begins to ring. What a sweet little Saturn... Even if I disregard it, the lock will automatically undo itself, for my sake. Please tell me you're fortunate enough to have a similar component in your car, or perhaps you are just much less absent-minded. It wouldn't be very difficult to outdo me there.

Regardless of how intelligent you are, you often don't even have to think. Technology has begun to outsmart the general public. Sometimes, it's frankly annoying. However, other times, it saves my ass. Thank you Saturn!
