Surprises

Happiness is...

A sheer surprise. Not the kind where you know some unknown something is coming, but the kind where it just takes you out of the blue, dumbfounded, awestruck, and utterly confounded in the best way possible.

Somehow, after all of my advice, he still managed to sneak yet another Christmas gift into my household... from thousands of miles and vast waters away, he took my heart.

This Christmas was full of all things merry. I truly didn't deserve it. I have so many blessings I don't even know where to start. The holiday was it was very pleasant with good food, fellowship, and fun. And just as quickly as it came, it has past. But not without my gentle thanks. I am thankful for 2011. I am thankful for the little things, and big surprises. I am thankful for you.

Him

Happiness is...

Him. All of him. Being with him. Talking him for more than one hour, one day a week. Seeing him---really seeing him. Being held by him.

The life of a military girlfriend is no walk in the park. But oh, isn't leave glorious.

It feels like it should, a real relationship with real ups and downs, and more than just the telephone and computer. It feels like love. It feels like the perfect vacation. If only it didn't have to end.

Happiness is this. Tomorrow it's back to reality. But for today, I can revel in it.

All-Inclusive

Happiness is...

All-inclusive. If there is ever a chance to travel all inclusive... do it. Any meal, any drink, any activity, and you don't have to worry about the price. You've already paid.

I love it. I love not thinking about anything when I'm down there. I love the carefree relaxation that comes with all-inclusive. And I'd recommend it to anyone. Even just once.

Travel Alarm

Happiness is...

That moment when your alarm goes off and tells you it's time. It's time to get your butt out of bed and head to the airport. It's not like you've been sleeping anyway. No, you have been anxiously awaiting this morning and your trip to JAMAICA.

You can do this. You have run through each and every possible scenario in your head. Twice. You have double-checked your luggage and run all of the last errands. And now, you're finally going to an exotic island, a vacation, a getaway with your man.

You deserve this. After the fall you've had, it's all you're looking forward to. It'll be the time of your life. And your alarm. Just. Went. Off. Get up, get dressed, and head out the door!

After all, "I'm leaving... on a jet plane... don't know when I'll be back again..." :) Seeya!

Elements

Happiness is...

Getting to see loved ones in their elements. It puts them in a new light. I feel honored to share that part of them, and I feel like I understand them more as a person. Usually, I love them that much more as well.

When I went to MSSA  offices or Navy Deployment conferences, I felt more connected. I felt like I had a better grasp of the individual. I felt proud. Seeing the way he enjoyed it gave me a glimpse and made me excited for him.

Last night, it was a ride-along with a good friend. It was sweeeet. Seeing them in action, listening to their special lingo, watching their protocol, and seeing the pride they feel... it makes me reciprocate. You ARE special. Right now, you are the coolest one in the room. There's just no other way.

Countdown

Happiness is...

Countdowns. 5 weeks.
Yes, it's likely that I've already told you this is happiness. Does it look like I care?

Ellen

Happiness is...

Ellen Degeneres. I love everything about her. She's kind, fun, hilarious, and downright amazing. I often say I would cross over for her. Sometimes I think it may be true. She deserves it. Who else starts off a show by dancing and then sits down to scare guests, make jokes, and touch the heart?

It's all of my favorite emotions rolled into one neat hour. No wonder she's got Oprah's old spot.

That's all. Watch on.

You...

Happiness is...

You. Yes, you, reading this entry today. I recognize that there are hundreds of millions of people out there browsing things on the internet, but I know you're following along with my story. And I love you for that.

I love you for that, and for so many other reasons. Just remember your importance, whenever you're in doubt. I value you. It's just that plain and simple. You are more than a somebody.

Coming Out Day

Happiness is...

National Coming Out Day.
They deserve it. Today I celebrated by attending a Safe Zone training to help me be an ally to my colleagues and students. We discussed many facts about the discrimination and violence against LGBT individuals and how we can be the change. It was powerful. I believe there will be positive change in my generation's America. I am happy about this.

And it was a great way to undo yesterday's holiday. Columbus was not a hero. He did not discover America, nor did he start our nation. He exploited, enslaved, and murdered thousands of native peoples. Didn't know? Check it out.

Instead, today I honor people worthy of my admiration. My LGBT friends are truly heroic, and this training reminded me of that. I will likely be in awe until bedtime, warm and fuzzy to boot. Here's to you!

Countdown

Happiness is...

A friendly countdown. Put a ticker on the computer desktop, fashion a paper chain, or whatever other idea you have... but make those days count leading up to the big event!

There are still 70 days until I see him again... probably too early for a paper chain, but never too early to start counting. 70 is a good number, a number I can handle. It's a number that'll fly by before I know it. You gotta love the sound of that.

Travel

Happiness is...

Travel. It's one of my biggest passions... but I suppose I can't write a post every few days about it (what a shame). I have the heart of a foreigner!

I love experiencing new sights and getting a glimpse into a different culture... the language, the customs, the food, the people. When I was studying abroad I feel like I grew more in three months than I had in my 21 years before! I want to live my entire life in the mindset of a traveler, constantly exploring and learning. There is so much more to the world than our materialistic ignorant American background. I intend on looking into it all. I love trying new dishes, and I have a strong urge to continue with my language.

Traveling will always be a priority for me. Since I left Spain (and toured France, Italy, and Greece) I came home and have not left U.S. soil. It has now been over two years. Sure, I've visited South Dakota, Wisconsin, Colorado, Chicago, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee... but it's about time for another stamp on my passport. I need to see more than the same life, different accent. I am beyond stir crazy.

That's why I'm so excited for Jamaica. What's happier?

Bedtime Talk

Happiness is...

A bedtime phone call. It was just like the old times, and just as satisfying. Spend an hour listening to each others' stories about the day, wish each other well throughout the rest of the week, and end the call ready for an awesome night of sleep... happy and refreshed.

Snail mail.

Happiness is...

Snail mail. I love correspondence. I enjoy receiving emails, seeing cute posts on social networking sites, or a nice long phone call. But nothing quite cheers up my day like opening a letter and reading a note from someone. There's something so personal about the old fashioned way of doing things, signed, sealed, delivered. If I could, I might even consider sending a telegram to tell someone I'm thinking of them.

Some days all I wish for is life to slow down a little, to be able to curl up for a short nap, to enjoy lunch with friends, and to take pleasure in the simpler things like postal stamps and cute stationary.

Besides, with deployment in full swing, it makes it so much more romantic and  picturesque if you're receiving handwritten notes, sending cards with your perfume sprayed on the envelope, and waiting in between. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE skype. But, I also love the era of Pride and Prejudice, or of Little Women, or of Singing in the Rain. Old school, yo. Just like love letters.

Baptism

Happiness is...

The joys of being a godmother. Today was the big day, and though I started off feeling scared and nervous, it was an amazing day. And now, congratulations to my dearest god-daughter Alejandra Soleil! I love you oodles :)

It was a short and very informal service, followed by a very scrumptious reception. And of course the whole family was truly beautiful. I couldn't have asked for more!

Blessed with friends

Happiness is...

The fact that even though things seem to be difficult, there will always be some friend who can help take the load off. Tonight I had a friend cook me dinner knowing that I couldn't do it for myself (this damn apartment!). And that's all it takes to know that God is watching over me, even when the going gets tough.

It's not a great time in my life. But He keeps reminding me there are great things to hold on to! Thank you Sir.

Clarity at last!

Happiness is...

Skype head sets. Happiness is finally understanding my man when he is talking to me instead of hearing some garbled charlie-brown type vocals, instead of feeling like he's speaking to me underwater.

Happiness is a real, nice, conversation. Granted, it's going to be a little bitter for a while, but things will get better and skype talks will remain great.

Grandma

Happiness is...

Grandmas.
Mothers without consequences.
Lenses into the past.
Cookie jars, recipe books, yum.
Friendly family storybook.
Comedic relief and Wisdom in a convenient little package.
And I mean little :)

I love you Grandma!

Cuddled by Cats

Happiness is...

Cats who get in your face even when you think you don't want them there... you never know when you'll need them there.

Mine are thus inclined, and as annoyed as I sometimes get I can't help recognizing the sheer heartwarming nature that they provide. I love cuddling them, I love getting fed up by them cuddling me. I especially love waking up with a face full of them. I am loved.

Fruity wine

Happiness is...

A good glass of fruity wine on a warm sunny night.

Remind yourself that it's summer, that you have the entire evening ahead of yourself, and that you deserve this. Because you do. Sit on your deck, kick up your heels, and love yourself!

Breakfast

Happiness is...

Breakfast. Didn't I already tell you how much I love it?
