Happiness is...
That moment when you get to work and realize you have spare time to get things done. Maybe, just maybe, that means productivity for the day. It's rare in my job, but it's welcome!

Fall back.
Happiness is...
Daylight savings time. No, I did not gain an hour of sleep. You know me, it's like clockwork. I did, however have an extra morning hour to make some more progress on this Alternate Plan Paper (thesis). It's not colossal, but it's a feat for me, given my circumstances.
That is the extent of this weekend, though. Homework and more homework. I figure if I crunch enough in the following few days maybe I can avoid the stress around Thanksgiving and such, and I can anticipate December rather than dreading it. I figure if I do my stuff up front I can kick back and enjoy the last bit of my first semester of graduate school. Heck, maybe I'll even have the time to reflect on these weeks. I doubt it though. Maybe that's what I should have done with my extra hour this morning... then again, maybe not. Back to work, see you tomorrow!

Last five min
Happiness is...
The moment when you realize the day is almost over. It's so easy to get caught up in work, and then BAM... 5 minutes left. I love the feeling of knowing the day has escaped me (at least as long as I got the projects done that I needed to). It's nice to know that sweet release is so close and we've made it to the end.
On days like today, it was just about the only thing I needed.

Old Friends
Happiness is...
When you're out with an old friend and run into an even older friend. You may be excited to see someone that you haven't seen in a while, but the chances may be pretty good that you'll see another. Suddenly, it's all nostalgia, catching up, and loving being reunited!
Friends lose touch. Then they look back and smile. Then they meet up and share. And life goes on. I'm just enjoying the ride.

Resolution, still on.
Happiness is...
Keeping up with resolutions. Am I perfect? Definitely not... but I am 9 months in and I haven't forgotten quite yet. At least, I don't forget all the time.
I'm not sure the impact this journey has had on me. At times I feel like the only thing it means for my day is a waste of 5 minutes while I sit down and pound the keyboard. However, it's gotten me thinking. And who knows who I've made smile or what small things I've come to cherish. For more projects see: 1000 Awesome Things, Happiness Project, Postsecret, 365 Things to Do in the Twin Cities... Mine may not be that colossal, but it certainly keeps me on track.

awake with time to spare
Happiness is...
Extra time in the morning. Time to wake up, time to be me. Today, there's plenty.
So many people awake to late alarms and rush around the house. Not I. I prefer to wake up with ample time to get on my game, eat breakfast (yum!) and dawdle in the morning. So what if I miss that extra 20 minutes of sleep? I get to savor the joy of the early dawn, birds chirping, quiet breeze. And this is all coming from someone who is absolutely NOT a morning person to boot.
There's just something to be said about quiet. Reflection. Time. Breakfast.

Marathons
Happiness is...
Marathons. No, not running... who likes running enough to do it for 26.2 miles? Psh. :)
Although, I really do like an afternoon marathon of a quality TV show. Today I took a cat nap, and woke up to several hours of sitcom. It was exactly what a holiday is supposed to be. It was relaxing, fulfilling, amazing, and many other words. I could get used to it.
So to recap, I am not a big fan of distance running. However, I like going the distance with great TV. You got it?

Again!
Happiness is...
Springing forward. Well, in all reality, daylight savings time is not exactly what makes me happy. It doesn't bring joy to my life to suddenly lose an hour of sleep. Really, happiness is sunrises, again.
Spring is coming. That's so swell, I can't wait for the snow to melt and the warmth to come. It also means the day gets longer: the sun rises earlier and sets later. But just when I thought I was gonna miss the sunrise the rest of the season, daylight savings time was upon us. Now, the sun is magically rising an hour later all over again and I can experience those ambient colors on my way into work.
The commute seems shorter, the morning brighter. Welcome back, sunrise I missed you.

Get up and Get out
Happiness is...
Being completely self-motivated to exercise. When I joined the gym in November I was reluctant. Every day was a personal struggle to get up, get dressed, and head out. The first 40 minutes of the 50 minute workout was nagging and strenuous. I could not imagine why anyone enjoyed working out, aside from the slight release of adrenaline and lowered cortisol. Yes, it has its perks, but it is seriously a royal pain in my ass.
Now, months later, I feel bogged down and stressed out when I miss more than a day. I get excited to grab my book and bottle of water (yes, I read on the treadmill). After a while of making it a habit it has become a treasured part of my day.
It's worth it too. I feel overall happier, healthier, and completely competent. It's a difficult thing to explain, but I do know... happiness is the thrill of a good run.
